Rajasthan is the jewel in India’s crown. From fairy-tale palaces and epic forts to colourful festivals and wildlife encounters, this is India at its vibrant best.

Rajasthan is literally the Land of the Kings. You will certainly feel like one aboard your majestic Royal Enfield as you traverse a seemingly timeless world that you have only ever imagined. It’s a fabulous realm of maharajahs and their magnificent forts and lavish palaces, many of which are now glorious hotels and museums. The remnants of a rich and romantic past, either in evocative ruins or restored to their former splendour, have earned Rajasthan a place on the wish lists of most travellers. It is a land of deserts and jungles, camel trains and tigers, glittering jewels, vivid art and vibrant culture. The calendar is littered with festivals and the shopping and cuisine are nothing short of spectacular. Considered by many as a must-see state of India, brimming with endless incredible eye-opening attractions.

Be captivated by the distinguished, turbaned cameleers bringing produce into Jaipur’s pink city. Be stunned at the formidable walls of the mighty Mehrangarh as it towers above the blue city of Jodhpur. Be swept away with India’s most romantic city as its reflection shimmers across Lake Pichola. Once you’ve slept in a palace, imagined yourself living in a medieval fort or swayed on a camel, you’ll want to come back and soak up the atmosphere of past wonders.

All across Rajasthan, numerous forgotten forts emerge from mountain tops that along with the palaces fight for your attention. Lovingly restored palaces, including Jaisalmer’s fairy-tale desert outpost, Amber’s honey-hued fort palace and Jodhpur’s imposing Mehrangarh are on the itinerary. The colours of Rajasthan are impossible to ignore and the effect of emerald green, canary yellow and fire-engine red turbans and saris is simply dazzling.

Most flights touch down in the evening or early morning. By this stage, you’ve been on a plane for a while so a Himalayan Heroes representative will greet and accompany you to the hotel. This is a good time to just relax and meet the other people who will be joining you on your adventure. We will have a welcome dinner at the hotel or we might head into town for some of the best Indian food you’ve ever tasted.

After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Mandawa by taxi or bus and have lunch on the way. In the afternoon we’ll be met by our adventure leader and introduced to the Royal Enfield motorcycles who will brief us about the bikes, how to ride in a group and what to do if there is an incident. This is the time to ask any questions you might have. Once completed, we’ll warm up the bikes and explore the nearby villages before returning to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

3
DAY 3: THROUGH THE DESERT
MANDAWA TO BIKANER (approx 195kms – 5 hrs)

We start nice and early and ride through the arid Thar desert landscape, stopping for lunch along the way. Built in the late 15th century, it is richly decorated with paintings, stone carvings and mirror work and boasts a mix of architectural styles.

5
DAY 5: A MAGICAL DAY
FREE DAY IN JAISALMER

After breakfast, we’ll take a short ride and visit the Jaisalmer Fort which is one of the largest fortifications in the world. Built in 1156, it is situated approximately 80m above the city and has been the scene of many battles over the centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll have the opportunity to explore and get lost within the maze-like alleyways of the impregnable city walls of the fortress. Made of sandstone, it is the largest and only living fort and is densely populated with palatial houses of merchants, bustling bazaars, restaurants, and stunning architecture. In today’s daily life, the fort houses over a quarter of the city’s population. After lunch, we’ll also take another short ride to visit the 12-15th century built Jain Temples, located just outside of the city. A magical day.

6
DAY 6: DROMEDARIES IN THE DESERT
JAISALMER TO THAR DESERT (approx 100kms – 3 hrs)

After breakfast, a landscape full of sand dunes awaits us. After a short ride through the desert, we stay in a luxury tent situated approximately 15km from the Pakistan border. Once settled into camp, we’ll hop on what is known worldwide as the “ships of the desert” for a short journey through the desert. The sun setting over the sand dunes is simply spectacular so make sure you bring your camera. After sunset, we’ll journey back to camp for dinner and cultural entertainment.

7
DAY 7: THE BLUE CITY
THAR DESERT TO JODHPUR (approx 315kms – 7hrs)

Today’s ride is easy but we will be in the saddle for a long time. For many, seeing the Blue City of Brahims with their own eyes is the reason they joined this adventure. We check in to the hotel and wander the streets as you realise that today was truly unforgettable.

8
DAY 8: SOUTHERN KINGDOM
JODHPUR TO GHANERAO (approx 155kms – 5hrs)

After breakfast, we visit the Mehrangarh Fort, built in 1460 and situated 125m above the city. Formerly a palace for the Maharajas of the district, it is now a Museum. After lunch, we will continue south towards the Mewar Kingdom, where the scenery changes to a more tropical landscape.

9
DAY 9: VENICE OF THE EAST
GHANERAO TO UDAIPUR (approx 170kms – 6hrs)

Ranakpur is our first stop, where the intricately carved marble of the early 15th century Jain Temples, will leave you with your mouth agape. Our next stop will also have you speechless as we enter Udaipur, the “Venice of the East” which was built around Lake Pichola. Before dinner, you can wander through the streets, or head to the city palace museum for some historical culture.

10

12
DAY 12: PINK CITY
PUSHKAR TO JAIPUR (approx 150kms – 4hrs)

We travel as a group as we hit the highway straight through to Rajasthan’s capital city, Jaipur. Our first taste of the congested traffic that parts of India are renowned for. Built in 1727 Jaipur is one of the wealthiest cities of historic India, and is known as the Pink City. Once you’re checked into the hotel, you’ll have ample free time to wander the endless streets and bazaars.

13
DAY 13: AMBER FORT
JAIPUR TO RANTHAMBORE (approx 160kms – 5 hrs)

After breakfast, we will visit the Amer Fort (also known as the Amber Fort), originally built during a time of famine in the year 967AD. We continue on to Ranthambore National Park and Tiger Reserve. Again you will have plenty of free time to explore after we’ve checked into our hotel.

14
DAY 14: BENGAL TIGERS
FREE DAY IN RANTHAMBORE

For the photographers and animal lovers, we will have an early rise as our 4WD will be waiting for us to venture through the National Park and tiger reserve. We will encounter the local wildlife in their natural habitat, and hopefully get a glimpse of the resident Bengal tigers. On our return, we will have lunch and then head to the Ranthambore Fort and Trinetra Ganesh Temple to watch the sunset.

15
DAY 15: TAJ MAHAL
RANTHAMBORE TO AGRA (approx 260kms – 6hrs)

Today is sadly our last day riding, as we leave Rajasthan and enter Uttarpradesh, we will head straight to Agra and check into our hotel. Once settled we’ll take a private vehicle to visit one of the 7 wonders of the world – The Taj Mahal. We’ll stay for sunset as this majestic building is absolutely beautiful at dusk. We will then return to our hotel where we will have our farewell dinner and celebration.

16
DAY 16: HOMEWARD BOUND
AGRA TO NEW DELHI / AIRPORT (approx 220kms – 5hrs)

Today is officially the last day of our adventure and as we wave goodbye to our support crew, a private vehicle will escort us back to the craziness of Delhi where we will check into our hotel. You will have time to freshen up and do some last-minute shopping before we transfer you to the International Airport.

Back on home turf, you won’t be able to explain the scale of this journey and photographs and videos will fail to do your adventure justice. The memories of this epic adventure will stay with you forever.
We know you’ve had the adventure of a lifetime seeing the incredible sights that Rajasthan and India have to offer and hope to see you again for another mind-blowing adventure, Namaste.

INSURANCE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

(INDIA, NEPAL, BHUTAN, TIBET, MONGOLIA, MYANMAR and SRI LANKA)

In the countries we conduct adventures, commercial insurance on motor vehicles is either not available, or is of questionable value. 3rd party insurance will usually not cover foreigners and even if it does, it is generally worthless if one needs to make a claim. In the event of an accident in these countries, the situation is usually settled on the spot without the “assistance” of insurance companies. If insurance companies are involved, it can take days, weeks and even months before there is a resolution.

Damage Cap Option “DCO”

Himalayan Heroes offers its riders the option of capping the cost of your damage bill on the motorcycle you are riding. The cost of this damage cap option “DCO” is US$195, paid as a lump sum before the tour starts. In the event you damage the motorcycle, the DCO will cap your damage bill at US$200.

3 Scenarios

  1. If, like most of our riders, you do not damage the motorcycle then the total cost to you is only the cost of the DCO = US$195.
  2. If, like some of our riders, you put the bike down at slow speed and damage mirrors, levers, foot pegs etc and the damage bill is say, US$120 then you pay the US$120. The total cost to you is US$315 (US$195 DCO + US$120 damage bill)
  3. If you have a big off and damage the tank, forks etc and the damage bill is say US$750 then your damage bill is capped at US$200. The total cost to you is US$395 (US$195 DCO + US$200 damage bill).

The DCO is optional, so if you would like to carry the risk yourself, you are welcome to. At the completion of the tour, you will be presented with an itemised bill of the damage to the bike. Approximately 50% of our riders do not damage the bikes and of the 50% that do receive a damage bill, the majority of the bills are less than $300. Please send us an email if you’ve got any questions about the DCO.

The DCO is not an insurance policy and therefore any costs related to it cannot be claimed on a travel insurance claim.
